Parallel analysis of global garlic gene expression and alliin content following leaf wounding

چکیده

Abstract Background Allium sativum (garlic) is an economically important food source and medicinal plant rich in sulfides other protective substances such as alliin, the precursor of allicin biosynthesis. Cysteine, serine sulfur alliin However, little known about content under abiotic stress or mechanism by which it synthesized. Results The findings revealed that was lowest garlic roots, highest buds. Furthermore, levels decreased mature leaves following wounding. Transcriptome data generated over time after wounding further significant up-regulation genes integral to biosynthetic pathways cysteine leaves. Conclusions suggest differential expression cysteine, sulfide-related underlies accumulation its precursors garlic, providing a basis for analyses

Synthesis of the flavour precursor, alliin, in garlic tissue cultures.

The path of synthesis of alkyl cysteine sulphoxides, or flavour precursors, in the Alliums is still speculative. There are two proposed routes for alliin biosynthesis, one is from serine and allyl thiol while the other is from glutathione and an allyl source via gamma glutamyl peptides. The routes have been investigated by exposing undifferentiated callus cultures of garlic and onion to potenti...

Synergistic antiyeast activity of garlic oil and allyl alcohol derived from alliin in garlic.

Garlic oil (GO) and allyl alcohol (AA), both derived from alliin in garlic using different preparation methods, cause potent growth inhibition in yeasts. GO and AA inhibited Candida utilis ATCC42416 in different ways: GO has fungistatic activity while AA has fungicidal activity. GO and AA have almost identical antimicrobial potencies against the indicator yeast, with minimum inhibitory concentr...

Inhibition of carcinogen-induced DNA damage in rat liver and colon by garlic powders with varying alliin content.

The present study was designed to investigate the protective efficiency of three garlic powders, obtained from bulbs grown in soils with different levels of sulfur fertilization, against DNA damage. Increasing fertilization of soil resulted in an increased alliin content of the powders. Garlic powders were administered to rats for 2 weeks (5% of the diet) and their antigenotoxic effects were ex...

Quantitation of ergosterol content and gene expression profile of ERG11 gene in fluconazole-resistant Candida albicans

Background and Purpose: The frequency of opportunistic fungal infections in immunocompromised patients, especially by Candida species, has sharply increased in the last few decades. The objective of this study was to analyse the ergosterol content and gene expression profiling of clinical isolates of fluconazole resistant Candida albicans. Materials and Methods: Sixty clinical samples were ide...

Revisiting Global Gene Expression Analysis

Gene expression analysis is a widely used and powerful method for investigating the transcriptional behavior of biological systems, for classifying cell states in disease, and for many other purposes. Recent studies indicate that common assumptions currently embedded in experimental and analytical practices can lead to misinterpretation of global gene expression data. We discuss these assumptio...
